Boatshed Seattle Featured Boat of the Week
It’s amazing how the “London bus theory” can apply to yacht brokerage here at Boatshed Port Solent! All of a sudden I find myself marketing quite a few “little old boats!” I love them – I own one myself, and the real joy of these little darlings is meeting the people that own and sail them, and indeed the people who buy them!. They (the people) are mostly durable, flexible, seamanlike and above all cheerful. Actually you could apply that to the boats too!
There are few records of the boats that came out of David Hillyard’s Littlehampton yard including knowing exactly how many were built since no records were kept by the yard until after the Second World War when the boat numbers were started at an arbitrary 400. The number typically assumed is that probably over 800 were built as there are certainly records for 600 with tonnages between 2.5 and 29 tons. So it is only a well imagined guess that this 12 ton Hillyard was built for a tall owner. To achieve the increased height in the accommodation she was built with an extra plank in the topsides. The result is actually quite surprising with a real sense of space in the main saloon and aft cabin created by the addition of the extra plank. With plenty of varnished wood, a good sized galley a great aft cabin with its own heads and an abundance of lockers and stowage it seemed to me that this boat could either accommodate a large family when cruising or provide a really great live-aboard.

The Gibraltar Yacht Registry is part of the Red Ensign Group (see link below) and carries with it all the advantages of the standard Red Ensign and a few more. Like MCA Part 1 registration the Gibraltar Yacht Registry issues Part 1 registration allowing a mortgage to be registered on a yacht. However, unlike the MCA Part 1 Registry the Gibraltar Registry is not only open to all British citizens and British bodies corporate but also to citizens of the European Union (EU) and the citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA). EU and EEA citizens need to have a local representative; a function that Boatshed Gibraltar can fulfill for a nominal fee. This can be of value especially for EU and EEA citizens who for any reason want to keep their boat out of their own national register. This arises when a national register has very onerous regulation or bureaucracy.
There are some boats that are so distinctive that to the average yachts person, it is difficult to be mistaken. The Fisher range of boats are of this ‘ilk’. Eventhough they fall within the standard lengths and proportions of most modern yachts, the designer’s pen came up with a different and yet eye catching design that is hard to better. The designer’s instructions were of course for a particular style of vessel and indeed, you won’t be lining up on anything other than a fun race at your local club, but when it comes to seaworthy designs and solid construction then these boats are at the head of the fleet. At Boatshed Medway we have a Fisher 34’ which is for sale. This Fisher 34’ is for sale at a price of £127,500 Fisher 34 . Log onto the website and you will find all the specification and 46 colour photos.

After all the training and all the organising the day of the race arrived rather too quickly. We met at St Katherine’s Dock at 06.00 to load the last remaining bits of kit and had a final briefing before rowing back towards Westminster Bridge for the start. The bridge was busy with friends and families and it was a great send off. The race stated at 09.00 and for the first 2 minutes we were in the lead! No doubt you can guess the rest!
