Boatshed Lake Michigan - Getting out on the water!

Boatshed Lake Michigan - Getting out on the water!

Thursday, 14 October 2010

This past weekend Oct 9th I was invited out for a sail on a Hunter 376 “Orion”. The season is winding down, yards are in full swing with haul – outs and winterizations. It ‘s hard to believe winter is around the corner with 80 degree temps we have had for the last few days, but it is coming fast. It was a fine day to be on the lake although the air was light, 5knts if that and seas relatively calm. Pictures of the shore line include the Milwaukee Art Museum a distinctively Santiago Calatrava design, tall ships at Discovery World and a view from up high of McKinley, Marina as I had my first opportunity to be hoisted up a mast to release a stuck halyard. It was a great photo op. Said to say we did remove the sails on Orion at the end of the day, getting her ready for winter storage.

Sometimes, I come to the conclusion you just get too many emails. Anyhow, whilst poring through Friday’s delivery of the odd two or three hundred emails in my inbox, I noticed one titled Rib Raid; nothing to do with technical redundancy on servers. When I opened it, I found it was an invitation to go and join the guys at Boatshed, Hamble for a brief soiree around the Solent.

Boatshed Brighton comments on GRP CLASSICS

Boatshed Brighton comments on GRP CLASSICS

Tuesday, 28 September 2010

My first boat was an beaten-up old marine ply kayak that my Dad bought for a fiver and my Grand Father, who was a cabinet maker, restored to full glory. She was a bit heavy for a kayak but provided you were going in a straight line she was great. Her varnished woodwork shone like a mirror and as I trolled up and down the Thames in the spring sunshine I new she was a classic. From that moment on I was hooked on boating.

My day started with a fantastic tour on HMS Dauntless at the PSP Southampton boat show 2010. Charlotte, the HMS Dauntless weapons officer, Charlotte or Ma'am, met us and escorted us onboard. HMS Dauntless is the second ship of the Type 45 class of air defence destroyer (AAW) built for the Royal Navy (also known as the Daring or 'D' class).

Boatshed Yorkshire sea trial in Force 4/5

Boatshed Yorkshire sea trial in Force 4/5

Friday, 17 September 2010

Having done my dayskipper practical earlier in the year with York Cruiser Training Centre and had Broom Boats check Yorkshire Belle over during the Winter service it was time to have a short sea trial. Some friends with a steel hulled motor cruiser they bought in Holland two years ago had also expessed a wish to give it a try too so the idea was to do it in company-a necessity in their case because they do not have VHF or any nav aids. The plan was to do the quick hop out of Great Yarmouth and back in at Lowestoft and a day was chosen subject to weather.

Boatshed North Wales sponsors Abersoch Keelboat week.

Friday, 17 September 2010

Abersoch Keelboat Week has just celebrated it’s 28th year and once again Boatshed North Wales was proud to sponsor the event. Keelboat Week has been enjoying increased entries in recent years and SCYC enjoys a reputation for excellent race organisation and Cardigan Bay has to be one of the best yachting venues in the UK. The weather was fairly mixed, but the racing was fantastic with new entrants from the south coast, Scotland and the east coast. Thursday was sponsors day and Boatshed North Wales chartered a local boat and took the other sponsors around the course to enjoy the racing at close quarters while Andy Topham kept everyone entertained by explaining what was going on. Off the water SCYC looked great with the sponsors Flags and Banners displayed all week and the social events in the evening were a big success. Boatshed North Wales kicked of the week by sponsoring the opening night with live music to get everyone in the mood. All in all a brilliant week, we can’t wait for next year.

GRADO Charter July 2010

The last time I heard the phrase “General Strike” was probably during an O-Level History lesson some considerable number of years ago. However, in terms of the impact that these words had on me personally, I can assure you that the UK’s General Strike of 1926 paled into insignificance compared to the Italian General Strike of 2010.
